Odor Complaint Follow Up

by Bill Tobin
Two officials from the DEP and Health Agent Ann McCobb visited the Lowland Industrial Park on Wednesday morning to try to determine the source of the odors that are offensive to the neighbors.

The venting systems on the LISTA roof were examined as to to their capacity and to determine how much is coming out of the stacks. LISTA has hired a consultant to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the process. A chemical report submitted in June to the Board of Health was determined that it contained inadequate data, and did not recommend a cause or identify chemicals.

At this time, the claims can not be validated, but there is definitely an odor problem in the neighborhood, which is exacerbated by atmospheric conditions and temperature inversion. The source is unknown and could be from other venting stacks in the park.

LISTA is extremely coopertive with the Board of Health and is anxious to solve the problem. The Board of Health is working to eliminate this public nuisance and the potential that it is a public health hazard. LISTA turned off the evaporators as of September 26th and is currently transporting the water off site, at a cost to LISTA of $10,000 a week. That should be motivation to find a quick remedy to the problem.
