Yoga Tip of the Weekby Roberta Weiner
Rainy weather is a great time to go within. Take a moment right now, while you're reading this, to close your eyes and notice your breath. Say to yourself, "When I breathe in, I feel calm. When I breathe out, I smile." Continue using this simple mantra (mantra meaning repeated word or phrase). If you like, shorten it to "calm" and "smile." Add an inner smile as you watch your resistance to the rain slip away. As thoughts intrude, simply notice without judging yourself. (Particularly if your resistance is stubborn and/or you were planning an outdoor graduation party today!) Return to the mantra. Practicing a 5-minute meditation each morning is a lovely way to start the day. If that seems daunting, try repeating the mantra just one time. Just that little bit of awareness can cause a huge shift in consciousness. Here's a rain poem from the beloved Shel Silverstein: Rain I opened my eyes And looked up at the rain, And it dripped in my head And flowed into my brain, And all that I hear as I lie in my bed Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head. I step very softly, I walk very slow, I can't do a handstand-- I might overflow, So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said-- I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head.
